Kyalami future secure? PDF Print E-mail
Written by idrive
Monday, 20 February 2012 07:08

It seems that Kyalami's future is secure, at least for the time being.

We hear a final liquidation order was granted against the farm Bothasfontein (the land on which Kyalami race track is built) last week and the Theodosiou brothers – Anthony, Dimitri and Sedrick, will leave shortly.

The next step is that the property goes on auction and the Imperial Group buys back what it rightfully owns. Sounds complicated, but at least the wheels are in motion.

It has just been confirmed that Zwartkops will host the opening round of the 2012 Wesbank Super Series and not Kyalami as expected.
The issue of categories racing on the day was met with the following response: "the categories remain as they were in 2012 - Bridgestone Production

Cars, V8 Supercars, Engen VW Cup, South African Single Seaters and South African Motorcycle Championship."

Kyalami still not confirmed PDF Print E-mail

With a mere 24 days to go before the begining of the 2012 Wesbank Super Series, billed as South Africa's premier national championship roadshow, there is still no clarity on whether it will be at Kyalami as scheduled, or at Zwartkops.

We heard the owners of Kyalami originally wanted R600k to stage the event but that was reduced by half but also rejected by Wesbank. The latest offer appears to be lower still but is for a bare circuit. In other words the WSS promoters (ask who that might be, coz we certainly don't know!!) will walk into a bare circuit and have to arrange everything from security to toilet paper.

As we said two days ago ... watch this space.

UPDATE: We have heard from a reliable source that the opening round of the Wesbank Super Series will in fact be held at Kyalami as originally planned. A meeting confirming this will take place tomorrow and an announcement confirming the venue is expected to be made on Monday.

Zwartkops to host Wesbank Super Series opener

It was confirmed late yesterday that the opening round of the 2012 Wesbank Super Series national circuit racing championship on 03 March has been moved from Kyalami to Zwartkops.

The reality of this means that Zwartkops will have hosted three consecutive rounds of the Wesbank Super Series

It appears an imminent court case over who actually owns Kyalami played a role in the decision.....watch this space

Cronje loses rally title in court PDF Print E-mail

Mark Cronje is no longer the 2011 national rally champion. After a rather bizarre series of protests and appeals, the title has gone to Conrad Rautenbach.

Rautenbach retired from the Gauteng Rally in June. He was also subsequently excluded for reconnoitring a stage. Toyota's Johnny Gemmell was given the same penalty.

Rautenbach then appealed the entire event on the grounds that it was badly organised and many competitors gained an unfair advantage by taking shortcuts which was even encouraged in the provided pace notes.

The National Court of Appeal found that the general event organisation, organisational deficiencies and shortcutting were grounds that the event should be declared null and void and no competitor should score any points.

As a result, by protesting an event he didn't finish, Rautenbach ends up as champion ...... Rules allow each competitor to drop their worst score of the season, and a disqualification cannot be be dropped. That meant Rautenbach had to drop a good points haul and if he'd been able to drop the Gauteng Rally he still would have been champion.

It seems as though a round of next year's Wesbank Super Series could be in the streets of Durban in June.

Details are sketchy but it appears this will not be the old A1GP course although it will incorporate some of the roads used. The race is likely to be based at the Moses Mabhida stadium which was earmarked as a venue for a round of the FIA GT championship last year.
