The annual BMW vs Opel day at Gerotek turned out to be a fascinating contest that left the outright record for the high speed oval at 269.053 km/h Reghard Roets drew first blood as he hustled a Rob Green Motorsport supercharged BMW M3 round the oval at 266 km to set a new record. However, before the celebrations had started VW Cup racer Jacques Joubert blasted Roets' record to smithereens when he raised it to 269.053km/h in a Nissan Skyline GTR35 wich has the benefit of four wheel drive. "It gets quite hairy and on the next lap you can see your tyre marks, black lines which give you an idea of how hard the car is working. On one lap I got it sideways coming off the banking which was quite interesting," said Roets. "I'll be back to break 270km/h," he added. |

The real reason why bikes didn't race at Phakisa |

As is common knowledge, neither of the Interfile Motorcycle classes raced at Phakisa, round five of the Wesbank Super Series. It was widely believed that competitors had refused to race as the track was unsafe. However, a number of riders who had raced a Northern Regions Motorcycle event at the circuit the previous weekend said they didn't see a difference in the track from the one event to the next. Two front runners said they would have raced if they had a choice. We asked Motorsport South Africa's Motorcycle Commission President why competitors had refused to race, and got the following response: "The bikes did not refuse to race on Saturday. At the last inspection a few weeks ago certain requirements re: backfilling etc had to be done before the WSS round. These were done but were inadequate considering the car races the weekend prior and the methods used. This was compounded by cars running wide onto the backfill which caused a 30mm drop off into soft sand and then a 'burm'. As a result, and considering all aspects, and after consultation with the riders, Interfile and Wesbank, a decision was made to can the bike racing and replace it with a single bike on track SuperPole type of display for the public. This was deemed to be acceptable as only one bike would be going around the turns instead of a group which could lead to riders leaving the circuit. Hope this clears things up, again the bikes did not 'refuse' to race." Fact is that spectators were once again the big losers. |

In his first outing in the Midas Sport Lotus Exige at Zwartkops yesterday, former A1GP race winner Adrian Zaugg stunned class A Bridgestone Production Car regulars as he quickly got into the 1 minute 7 sec barrier. Despite an off at the quick first corner he posted a best time of 1 min 07,3 sec which is a front running pace. The fact that this was his first outing in a car with a roof and the first time he's driven a car with a gear lever - his road car is an auto - makes the achievement even more impressive. "He's the best driver I've seen and a nice down to earth guy," commented Richard Pinard who race the car earlier in the season. |
